SKY NEWS – AFTERNOON LIVE – 3.02.10 – INTERVIEW WITH PETER ANDRE

KAY BURLEY:

Joining us now is the singer, Peter Andre.  I should point out right from the get go that you were planned to come on anyway.

PETER ANDRE:

I was booked last week.

KAY BURLEY:

You were coming in to talk about your new album weren’t you, which we will talk about but let’s talk about the wedding to start with.  Did you know?

PETER ANDRE:

I didn’t know.

KAY BURLEY:

When did you find out?

PETER ANDRE:

Last night.  I was doing a signing in Basildon –  which was brilliant by the way,  thanks to everyone that turned up – and about ten o’clock, ten thirty last night I got a phone call saying it’s believed so I had no idea but you know, it’s not my business really I guess.

KAY BURLEY:

What did you think though?  You must have been a bit hurt.

PETER ANDRE:

To be honest with you, I wasn’t surprised at all and just like any other parent all I care about is, you know, I just want a good influence on my children, that’s it, that’s all I care about and that is the honest truth.

KAY BURLEY:

But it’s quick isn’t it?  What, seven months, then she dumped him and they’re back together again.

PETER ANDRE:

I don’t speak English!

KAY BURLEY:

You’re being very cautious about what you say, okay.  What about the kids though?

PETER ANDRE:

The kids?  Well I’ve got the pleasure of going home very soon and I’ll be with them so I’m very excited about that.

KAY BURLEY:

Do they know that their mummy has got married?

PETER ANDRE:

Not from me.

KAY BURLEY:

How is that conversation going to go?

PETER ANDRE:

I don't know, actually I haven’t got to that point yet but I guess it’s something I’m going to have to at some point explain.  I just try … I have always said with the kids it’s a little bit like Santa Claus, you kind of just let them believe everything is okay until the point they have to know but I think maybe that time has come, I don't know.

KAY BURLEY:

But will they live with you?

PETER ANDRE:

I’m not allowed to talk for legal reasons about what the arrangements are but I’m getting to see my children a lot and that to me is everything.

KAY BURLEY:

What you can talk about though is you new album.

PETER ANDRE:

Yes.

KAY BURLEY:

Can we have a quick listen first?

PETER ANDRE:

Please.

KAY BURLEY:

Here we go.

[Excerpt from Peter Andre’s new album]

KAY BURLEY:

And it’s doing well, yes?

PETER ANDRE:

I got told that after the first and second day of sales it’s already in the top ten.  I mean as an album – we’re not releasing that as a single, it’s just basically to promote the album so the British public have been nothing short of wonderful to me.

KAY BURLEY:

Why do you think that is?  Why are people … because it got a bit stupid and it was Team Peter or Team Katie, why do you think people have come on your side?

PETER ANDRE:

You know, I don't know, what I do know is that yesterday when I was doing the signing, I turned around to my brother and I said, do you know what brother, I must have the most loyal fans in the world.  I have to, because they stick with you through thick and thin and it is amazing and when you have got fans like that, you think wow, I mean it humbles you every time.  Every time you get to a place and there is a crowd or there’s a response you do think, wow!  I am always shocked by how amazing the support is.

KAY BURLEY:

Is it hard to sing love songs at the moment?

PETER ANDRE:

Do you know, it’s funny because on this album it’s a compilation of songs that I’ve recorded over the last 15 years, some songs I wrote, they are all love songs over the last 15 years and there are songs on this that I wrote that are all quite personal but from 1996, 2004, 2000, so they are all at different stages but when it comes to ballads I do tend to write more personal things, yes.

KAY BURLEY:

Do you think we know too much about your love life?

PETER ANDRE:

I think you’d all love to get away from it but this is purely a Valentine’s album though so you could say you probably know enough that you need to know.

KAY BURLEY:

How did you get yourself in that position?

PETER ANDRE:

What’s that?

KAY BURLEY:

Where everybody knows about almost every little part of your life?  I mean you have got a film crew with you filming us filming you filming us as well today.

PETER ANDRE:

Yes, well we just started with the film crew on Monday when we started promoting this album and what we do is we start filming, so I had a break of about a month and a half, actually more, about two months and I went to Australia in that time and I saw my mum and dad and my brothers, so to be honest with you it’s not constant and if I didn’t have any other job and it was just the filming, it wouldn’t be many hours a day but they were with us in the morning and then they left us and they’ve just come back now and they’ll leave us after this, so that’s how it works.

KAY BURLEY:

But your whole life is television is it?

PETER ANDRE:

I am quite lucky because …

KAY BURLEY:

Could you say ‘enough’ to the cameras?

PETER ANDRE:

… as soon as I go home and I shut my door and it’s my time, that’s it.  I understand that it’s an industry where there will come a point where you will probably turn around and say do I really want to do this, do I constantly want to do this but right now I’m 36 years old, I feel young, I feel great.

KAY BURLEY:

You’re too thin though, what’s happened?

PETER ANDRE:

Do you think, honestly?

KAY BURLEY:

I read you’d lost three stone.

PETER ANDRE:

Yes, I did, yes.

KAY BURLEY:

Three stone?

PETER ANDRE:

But I know someone who found it.  I’m just joking.

KAY BURLEY:

How come you lost so much weight?

PETER ANDRE:

Well initially obviously …

KAY BURLEY:

With the break up?

PETER ANDRE:

It’s inevitable,  yes, but then after that I thought keep training, don’t put it back on because I want to keep thin, I want to keep trim plus I’m rehearsing for the tour, I’ve got a 38 date tour.

KAY BURLEY:

When does that start?

PETER ANDRE:

February 19th, and I’m working hard for it so I want to make sure I stay trim for it but you know my life is great.  As I was saying, I’ve got the album, I’ve got the tour, I’ve got the reality show, I’m constantly  busy, the perfume is still number one.  Again it goes back to the support, you know, so it’s incredible, incredible really.

KAY BURLEY:

What do you think about Alex Reid?

PETER ANDRE:

I don't know the man, I’ve never met him.

KAY BURLEY:

Did you watch him on Celebrity Big Brother?

PETER ANDRE:

I didn’t watch Celebrity Big Brother but I didn’t do it to be harsh, it wasn’t out of non interest, I was rehearsing a lot.

KAY BURLEY:

But when he dresses like that you must have a view?

PETER ANDRE:

Look, again it goes back to my children, I just want a good influence around my children.  The reason I don’t say any more than that is because if you want the honest truth, that’s all I care about and everyone knows that, everyone knows that’s all I care about so why focus on anything else but them?  If people are a good influence to them, I'm happy.  If they’re not, I’m not happy.

KAY BURLEY:

Although it is reported apparently they celebrated the wedding by going to strip clubs last night.   I’m not sure how you feel about that but I just wonder how you might feel about him … or maybe you do have a view, I don't know?

PETER ANDRE:

On what, sorry?

KAY BURLEY:

On whether they celebrated in strip clubs last night.

PETER ANDRE:

You know what, I’m going to celebrate tonight, I’m going to go home and cook my kids a nice meal and I couldn’t care less and I’m so sorry, I’m not being bitter, I’m not being … You know, I understand I have to be asked these questions, I understand and for someone watching, when I said to you ‘Oh my gosh, people are going to think I’ve come on this show because of that’ but obviously I was pre-booked.  The point is, you have to ask these questions and I understand because it’s news …

KAY BURLEY:

And also you’ve opened the door, you’ve invited cameras into your home so you have to accept that people are interested in your personal life.

PETER ANDRE:

Yes, and that’s why I don’t complain about it but the bottom line is I know what I focus my attention on and what I don’t focus my attention on.  Sure, if I wasn’t working so much I’d probably have a lot of time on my hands to think about a lot of things but the great thing is because I’m working and I get to be with the kids, I get to go to work, that’s why people are saying ‘Have you got a girlfriend?’ and I say no, at the moment my life is just crazy but I’m grateful for that because it takes my mind off everything you see.

KAY BURLEY:

Now I pre-warned you that we do have … I did have Dwight York sitting here and I chatted to him about the kids before …

PETER ANDRE:

Yes, and I didn’t see that but …

KAY BURLEY:

Well we have a grab now because he was talking about when you suggested that you wanted to adopt Harvey, this is what he said at the time.

PETER ANDRE:

Okay.

DWIGHT YORK: [speaking October 2009] I understand that he has to play a role because that comes as part of the baggage when you get involved with Kate but to stand here and say he was going to adopt my kid and now look what’s happened, four years down the road, is he prepared to come and adopt Harvey at this stage?  I don't think so.  So the onus falls back on the father which is me in the first place and that should not have been mentioned.

PETER ANDRE:

Well no disrespect but has he seen Harvey since that interview?

KAY BURLEY:

I don't know, has he?

PETER ANDRE:

The bottom line is this, I love that child, all right, and I don’t care what anybody says, I love that child, I see that child and to me a nice little thank you would be nice instead of telling me … I asked to adopt him because I love him, I didn’t ask to adopt him to be disrespectful.  When you love a child – he’s in my life, he calls me dad.  I’ve never said I’m his father but I’m so proud to have him in my life and it angers me, it angers me when people turn around and I get a comment like that.   Why is that disrespectful because I ask to look after someone’s child?  I thought that was a good thing, I thought that’s what we were supposed to do in this world.  I don’t understand that.  I come from a different background and I don’t understand that and I’m sorry but that angers me a little bit.

KAY BURLEY:

I think the reason that we wanted to show you that was because we were wondering how you might feel if Alex Reid then turns round and says that he wants to adopt the kids.

PETER ANDRE:

No one is going to … no one is going to take my kids away from me, nobody.  Nobody is going to take my kids away from me and I will fight to the death for that.  Sorry, that just … I didn’t expect that, I’m sorry.

KAY BURLEY:

As I said, we did tell you we were going to …

PETER ANDRE:

Yes, but I didn’t know what was said but that’s fine. Nobody is going to take my kids away from me and I will die for those children.

KAY BURLEY:

So if Katie came home and said Alex and I are …

PETER ANDRE:

It’s not going to happen.  I’ll tell you now, I will go to court … I don’t really want to talk about this, okay, sorry.

KAY BURLEY:

We didn’t mean to upset you.  Are you okay?

PETER ANDRE:

Yes, I’m fine.

KAY BURLEY:

Talk to me about the tour.

PETER ANDRE:

Er … okay … can we … I’d rather just stop this if that’s all right.

KAY BURLEY:

You want to stop?

PETER ANDRE:

Yes, thank you.

KAY BURLEY:

Okay, we’re sorry if we upset you.

PETER ANDRE:

No, no, it’s okay … thank you.

KAY BURLEY:

Thanks very much for coming in.

KAY BURLEY:

Now if you were watching just a few minutes ago you will have seen that Peter Andre was a little bit upset while he was talking to us here on Sky News.  I can tell you that he’s fine now, he is obviously a very doting dad and a bit upset about his kids and he is going to go home and spend the rest of the day with them and starts his tour in a couple of weeks time but everything’s fine, thanks very much indeed for your concerns.

KAY BURLEY:

I had a chat with Peter Andre in the green room and he said he’s glad that he can finally talk about his kids, his kids are the most important thing in his life to him and he wants everybody to know just how important they are.

JON DESBOROUGH (SPORTS PRESENTER):

Well he’s a dad.

KAY BURLEY:

He is a dad, three children.

JON DESBOROUGH:

So he’s bound to feel that way isn’t he?

KAY BURLEY:

Yes, yes and he knew about the Dwight York thing but he hadn’t actually seen it beforehand but we told him what was in it but it was just I think any thought at all of somebody taking over his kids.

JON DESBOROUGH:

Yes and I guess seeing and hearing Dwight talk about it was the thing that upset him. You hear about it, maybe it doesn’t upset you but when  you see him talk about it, it’s different.

KAY BURLEY:

Anyway, he’s all right now which is good.
